About the society
A home for African literature and cultural exchange.
We believe a story can make a room larger. ALCS brings people together around the ideas, languages and creative work of Africa and its diasporas.
Our purpose
Making room for voices that deserve to be heard.
African Literature and Cultural Society is a community-led platform based in Gothenburg. We bring together African writers from Sweden and around the world with readers, educators, researchers and cultural organisations.
Our programme includes literary festivals, author conversations, book presentations, storytelling for children and workshops about writing and publishing. We work to strengthen African languages and cultures by bringing them into generous, public conversation.
Our approach
We are interested in exchange rather than a one-way spotlight. That means creating spaces where different generations, languages and traditions can meet on equal terms, and where literature can lead to new questions.
